The Original Masterclass by Ken Strain
This Boom Operator Masterclass was filmed live in Los Angeles in July 2017 with over 100 people in the audience. In this completely online class, Ken Strain demonstrates the basic skills needed to excel in the age of long takes and multiple cameras that most sets have now. The course is designed to instill a base level of technique and understanding that can be the foundation for a successful and injury-free career.
You will learn how to carefully choose and adjust your equipment so that you can move with more freedom and comfort. Your equipment can be the difference between being able to boom a difficult shot or having just rely on wireless mics. In addition, some of the equipment shown will allow you to safely leave your boom mic on the set and plant microphones with speed and ease. There are updated notes for this section that will be available for download in your course area.
Once we get the equipment sorted out, we show you how to hold and move with the boom so that minimum energy and maximum range of motion is achieved, as well as steadiness. Some of this information directly challenges what you see in popular YouTube videos by less experienced (but well-meaning) sound people. We go from broad technique to addressing subtler aspects of mic handling for dialogue that make a noticeable difference in quality. Lots of little tricks are shared here that would take years to discover on your own. It all comes down to listening and paying attention to what’s working and what isn’t.
As a boom operator, a huge part of your success depends on how you work with other people on the set. We show you how to approach the set with the right mindset, and “set etiquette” so that you start off on the right foot. Everything you need to to level up and accelerate your path to mastery is here!
NEW FOR 2023: This course has been re-edited and captioned for more clarity and conciseness, with updated notes.
